On Tuesday, Arizona Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith submitted a list of eight teams he doesn’t want to be traded to. Smith, 35, has two years remaining on his contract at $5.6 million. The list submitted consists of teams Smith is against being traded to in agreement with his modified no-trade clause.

This doesn’t mean that Mike Smith is necessarily going anywhere. According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, John Chayka and the Coyotes are only in “listening mode”. If Arizona is planning on trading Smith, where might be a good fit?

One possible option could be the Calgary Flames. After the acquisition of Brian Elliott from the St. Louis Blues and the signing of Chad Johnson didn’t particularly work out, the Flames are again looking for a goaltender. Smith could potentially be a short-term solution for Calgary.

Trading Smith would also possibly open up the starting job to Louis Domingue or allow the Coyotes to explore other options in free agency.

Though Arizona is only in “listening mode”, Chayka appears open to the idea. Will we see Mike Smith in a Coyotes sweater next season?
